John Leavell: A C-Section Birth Story

Rebecaah and Rob were so excited to become parents. Meeting with them you could see that this baby was the extra addition of joy to their already wonderful life.

Rebeccah, a NICU nurse was calm and collected, while Rob planned and prepared to support his loving wife during labor as much as possible - including packing flickering flamless candles to create a relaxing atmosphere in the hospital.

They were ready and they were excited.

Rebeccah's due date came and went. This baby was late, but she knew she didn't want to rush the birth process. This baby had it's own agenda; she just had to be patient.

Throughout the next two weeks, contractions would start...and then stop.

Finally, Rebeccah and the Acclaim Nurse Midwives at Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital Fort Worth felt that it was time to make this happen. Rebeccah was scheduled to be induced, called the family that would be traveling from from out of state, and finished packaging her bags. Flameless candles included.

The checked into the hospital and began the induction. Things slowly moved along. Together they walked the halls of Labor & Delivery, trying everything the midwives suggested to progress.

Finally, after not progressing and much discussion, the decision that the best option for baby and mother was a c-section. As a NICU nurse, she knew having a healthy and safe baby is what mattered most to her.

Their parents came in to give their love before they took her back to the operating room.

Her mother helped her fix her surgical bouffant, held her face in her hands, and kissed her baby. Rob said it looks like a Jiffy Pop top and they both laughed.

Finally the team came back to wheel her away. As they rolled down the hall, they stopped so Rob's dad could squeeze her hand. As they continued down the hall, he stopped and wiped a tear away before turning to go back to the waiting room - you can just tell how much he loves her like his own daughter.

Meanwhile, Rob donned his surgical covers and was transformed into "Dr. Rob". "I'm ready to scrub in!"

Not too long later, a nurse came to get him. It was time for their baby to arrive!

Rob stayed close to Rebeccah, his head lowered near hers, his hand tightly holding her hand. Rebeccah closed her eyes and breathed calming breaths. Soon her baby would be here and she trusted her team.

In what seemed like seconds, the curtain was lowered and there was a beautiful, healthy baby boy. John Leavell was here!
