Blaire Violet | An Intimate Second Home Birth

As Jaime prepared for her second child's arrival, she knew she wanted this labor and birth experience to mirror her first. With a desire for a more intimate and natural birth and a fear of hospitals, she chose to have a home birth for her first baby, Heath. You can see her first birth story here.

After a wonderful experience in the comfort of her own home just south of Fort Worth, Texas, the decision to welcome her second baby into the world in the same manner was a no-brainer.

For both of her birth experiences, Jaime chose to work with one of my favorite midwife teams, Amanda Prouty and Susan Taylor of DFW Midwife Collective.

Understanding Birth at Home

Home births are becoming an increasingly popular option for expectant parents in Dallas-Fort Worth. It offers a unique and intimate experience that allows them to labor and give birth in the comfort and familiarity of their own homes.

Unlike a traditional hospital birth, where there is limited flexibility for personal choices, a home birth provides a more relaxed and calming atmosphere with the freedom to move and find comfort in a way that feels natural to your body. Whether you utilize the shower, the comfort of your own bed, or a birthing tub right in your bedroom, a home birth provides many options, including a water birth.

Many find the warm water of a birth tub to be incredibly relaxing and comforting, allowing you to better manage the intensity of labor with the buoyancy helping to alleviate the discomfort of contractions, easing the pressure on your body.

The Rollercoaster that is Labor

Jamie's labor started slow, early in the day. I arrived that morning to begin capturing her birth. After the birth of her first baby happened so quickly, I took no chances with the timing.

Her contractions which started stedy earlier that morning had began to stall. After a while Amanda, her midwife, arrived to see if we could help Jamie's contractions regulate. After many droppers full of Amanda's tinctures, Jamie's contractions kicked into gear.

Labor is often described as an emotional rollercoaster for expectant mothers, and it certainly was for Jamie's first birth. This time, however, Jamie was prepared. She knew what to expect and as her contractions intensified, increasing in frequency, she managed each one with controlled breath and focus - a fierce determination and inner strength propelled her forward.

As she moved closer to reaching 10 cm, Jamie’s husband Hunter knew his hard work was about to begin. With Heath's birth, Hunter learned the impact hip squeezes and lower back counter pressure had on Jamie's labor pain. For this birth experience, Hunter was prepared and knew exactly when and where he was needed during this process.

All in all, from the time her active labor truly started, Jamie's birth experience did not take long. As second births normally go, this labor only took a few hours for Jamie to reach transition.

As the intensity of her contractions reached their peak, she took control of her positioning and pushed in a way that was as comfortable and natural for her body.

And then, in an instant, her baby emerged into the world, surrounded by love and support.

As she cradled her newborn against her chest, basking in the awe-inspiring beauty of their first meeting, Jamie was overjoyed at the realization her little girl was her spitting image and likeness. She finally had her mini-me.

With the birth of her son, Heath, Jamie and Hunter began a tradition of celebratory champagne. As soon as Jamie was nestled into bed with her little one, Hunter popped the cork. This time a bottle of PINK champagne to honor their little girl

In that moment, the challenges of labor were forgotten, replaced by a profound sense of joy and fulfillment.

Reflecting on the experience of Jamie’s second home water birth in Fort Worth, Texas, I am overwhelmed with a sense of awe. The journey of labor and birth is an incredible testament to the strength and resilience of your body. From the first contractions to the beautiful moment of meeting your precious baby, every step of the process is filled with emotions. It is my favorite part of photographing births.

Empowering Expectant Mothers in Fort Worth

Childbirth is an incredibly transformative experience for everyone. It is a time filled with anticipation, excitement, and yes, even some anxiety. Expectant parents in Fort Worth are fortunate to have a vibrant and supportive community here in DFW that celebrates and embraces childbirth options. In DFW, there is a growing movement of parents who choose out-of-hospital options for their birth experience.

Hiring a birth photographer for this unique and intimate experience allows us to document all the emotions and watch that transformation unfold over and over again for a lifetime. These photographs allow parents a rare glimps from the outside in of your inner strength, the special connection and love between you and your partner, and most importantly, the moment your precious babies into the world.

And I am so glad Jamie and Hunter invited me to join them for this moment again!
